When I first started this course, I had two goals. My first goal was to just pass my first college class, and my second goal was to further my writing and communicating skills. These are the main things I believe helped me reach my second goal. At first, we learned that in order to build a strong sentence, it must not be too long, but it also can't be too short. The analogy of a garden path was used to illustrate this. Much like a trail through a garden, if a sentence is too short, you don't get enough, but if it is too long, you become bored an uninterested. Then we worked on writing a strong thesis statement. You never want to start your thesis with a question, it must contain your opinion, and it needs to contain a summary of your main points. We also discussed the importance of paragraphs in this class. Paragraphs separate individual ideas, allowing you to introduce new topics, while keeping your paper organized. Learning to write a strong introduction also greatly ...

In her article, “From He to She in First Grade”, Laurie Frankel describes how her son went from identifying as a male, to identifying as a female, in less than 2 years. This is not only morally insensitive, but it contradicts the very purpose we have as humans on Earth. It is also an illogical decision since Frankel’s child hasn’t even gone through puberty, meaning his brain has not yet matured. Frankel says, “she can be who she is on the inside and on the outside”, but biologically speaking, as God created him, her son is a male internally and externally. Even those that have undergone gender reassignment argue that it didn’t solve any problems, but created more. Though society says gender reassignment is acceptable and just, the opposite is true because it is based on false beliefs, it is contrary to our design, it is irrational, and it does not result in the solution that people desire. Society likes to argue that sex and gender are two separate terms. They say that sex is determ...

In her recent article “After String of Mass Shootings, Democrats Begin New Push for Gun Control”, New York Times staff writer Sheryl Gay Stolberg explains that gun control will help solve America’s shooting problems. I disagree that increasing gun control is the answer. Preventing certain variants to be manufactured, stricter background checks, and fewer guns will not solve America’s gun crisis. The only way to resolve this issue is by changing the way our society thinks and by creating a more positive, empathetic culture. During Congress’ first time back in the Capitol after their long recess in August, a bill that would prevent the manufacturing of large-capacity magazines was proposed. That only encourages citizens to buy more magazines, which increases profits for merchants while not affecting mass shootings. The magazine sizes are not the issue; the development of a selfish society that lacks empathy for others is the problem. A generation that integrates and normalizes this ide...

Anderson, Ryan. “New York Times Reveals Painful Truths About ‘Sex Change’ Surgery.” The Heritage Foundation, The Heritage Foundation, 26 Nov. 2018, www.heritage.org/gender/commentary/new-york-times-reveals-painful-truths-about-sex-change-surgery . Accessed 14 Oct. 2019. Chu acknowledges that sex reassignment surgery can’t truly reassign a person’s sex, because it was never assigned in the first place. Anderson says the reality is that “sex—maleness or femaleness—is established at a child’s conception, can be ascertained even at the earliest stages of human development by technological means, and can be observed visually well before birth with ultrasound imaging. Cosmetic surgery and cross-sex hormones don’t change biological reality.” Chu also recognizes that the process actually made things worse for him. He says that once he started the cross-sex hormones, he continually felt worse as time went on. He also mentions that his psychological state deteriorated once he started the tr...

“The Good Doctor”, developed by David Shore and aired on the ABC Network, follows a young, autistic medical resident named Shaun Murphy that aspires to be a surgeon. Played by Freddie Highmore, Shaun was also diagnosed with Savant Syndrome, which in his case, gives him an impeccable photographic memory. After dealing with a traumatic childhood in Casper, Wyoming, Shaun decides to move to San Jose, California. In San Jose, Murphy begins his residency at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. Shaun’s impressive memory and reasoning skills quickly lands him a spot as an incredible surgeon, but his behavioral struggles and horrible bedside manners cause frustration with his team, and his patients. In the series, you also get to see Shaun’s personal life, and how he learns to overcome the obstacles of his mental handicap. I would recommend this show, not only for its great actors, but for the interesting plot line as well. The team that works on “The Good Doctor” does an incredible job. While...

I chose my topic from the list of topics that were posted on BlackBoard. While reading through the titles of the articles, the one that caught my attention was “From He to She in First Grade” by Laurie Frankel. After reading her article, I decided to argue about how that situation, and gender reassignment in general, is based on false beliefs that go against God's design. After being told I could not base my argument on God's word alone, I decided to use scientific evidence that followed a biblical world-view. I used Google to find various articles about doctors and transgenders that talked about how bad gender reassignment is for the body. Also through Google, I found a resolution that was submitted by a Kansas Republican Party delegate that argued the LGTBQ+ community violated the God-given dignity of every human being. After acquiring my sources, I began to write my annotated bibliography. I read each article carefully to ensure I fully understood the purpose of it, then I ...
